John Legend Cast as Jesus for the Jesus Christ Superstar Live Concert

Famous musician, John Legend is expected to play Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar Live Concert! in the Easter Sunday production of the famous Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice play. Alice Cooper will be playing King Herod. The play will be directed by British director, David Leveaux. Up to this point, Legend has released five albums, his most famous so far being Get Lifted! He has also appeared on Soul Men, Underground, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. He has also worked with Plat on La La Land.

Aside from Jesus Christ Superstar, NBC has also done The Sound of Music, Peter Pan, and The Wiz as live musicals. The original Broadway version of Jesus Christ Superstar with Jeff Fenholt as Jesus began in 1971, ran until mid-1973 and saw over 700 performances. The show airs on television on Easter Sunday, which is April 1st.

Legend has stated that he’s overjoyed to be a part of the cast. He has also stated that with him in the production that he’s sure that the story will be done more justice. From what Robert Greenblat, Chair of NBC Entertainment has stated, the role of Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar demands an actor with a wide vocal range, which Legend does have a talent for. Another reason that Legend’s casting is ground-breaking is that it will also break the traditional image of Jesus as a man with light skin and light brown long hair.

It’s not known what the real Jesus actually looked like since people didn’t leave much in the way of portraits back in that time. However, some scholars believe that it’s likely that Jesus had olive skin and very dark hair. As devout Christians like to reinforce, however, it’s not Jesus’ physical image that matters in the end but rather what he did for humanity that does.
